politicsTowards The Police StateBy Shadow It is interesting that the Government chose to use anti-terrorism laws to freeze the assets of an Icelandic bank. Even for the best of reasons anti-terrorism laws are for use against terrorists. To use them in any other context is surely an abuse of those laws and our democracy. We also hear that some local councils are using anti-terror legislation to spy on people who have more than the permitted number of bins! Oswaldtwistle Council Rumpus Over Penine Reach ProposalsBy Tackler The Oswaldtwistle Council meeting took place at the Civic Theatre at 7pm on Tuesday, July 16th. Much of the meeting was taken up by discussion of the contentious Pennine Reach proposals. Many businesses are concerned about the negative impact on trade that the proposed parking restrictions along Union Road might cause and this was reflected in the meeting. Church Police Authority MeetingLancashire Police authority held a meeting at Elmfield Hall, Gatty Park, Church on Thursday 19th June at 7pm. Apparently although crime has fallen in Hyndburn there are one or two things you need to keep your eyes open for. The price of metals has risen so much on international markets that metal thefts are currently very popular. If you see someone on the roof of your local church or other public building they may well be pinching the lead from the roof especially if they are there after closing time. Defeat Ageism!By Mr Angry young man I was shuffling through the various leaflets I have collected during my preparations for publishing Oswaldtwistle Community Action News when I came across a leaflet I had put aside to read later. It was a leaflet about the Hyndburn Over 50s Forum. I thought about how such an organisation might take an active part in improving the lot of the elderly in the community. Since you are never too old to learn they could run courses on wheelchair maintenance, doddering for the elderly and how to die quietly without embarrassing anyone or causing a fuss. |
