A Sparrow Falls

By Tackler

As I left my home this morning I noticed a sparrow dead on the road beside my car. I don't know how it died. Maybe it was pecking at some tasty morsel on the road or swooping down joyfully in some spectacular aerobatic display. Probably it encountered one of the noisy, gas guzzling monsters that populate our roads. Perhaps you could spare some time in your prayers to acknowledge the demise of one of God's creatures, slaughtered in our rush to get to work and maybe, just maybe you could also remember the 3,000 humans who die on our roads every year.

Talking Shop is a Pennine Lancashire wide arts project. The original idea came in 2005 from Mid Pennine Arts who sent a researcher and photographer to Colne to look at local shops. The resultant photographs formed an exhibition at the Mid Pennine Gallery in Burnley.

The business which is currently run by David and Peter Manning, was started by their father Michael Manning 60 years ago. He opened a chip shop at Waterfoot in the Rossendale Valley and began baking his own pies. Soon he bought the Burtons bakery chain which already had three shops.
